Carrefour looks to digitalise the shelf-edge, naming Pricer as preferred ESL supplier

Leading global grocer and retail group, Carrefour, has selected Pricer, the world’s most reliable provider of ESLs (Electronic Shelf Labels), as its preferred supplier for new ESL installations, as well as its chosen partner for upgrading stores that are already equipped with Pricer’s ESL technology.

Founded 60 years ago in France, Carrefour is a leading global retailer and pioneer in large food retail business.  Operating in over 30 countries, with 12,225 stores and 321,000 employees worldwide, Carrefour aims to stay as close to its customers by continually adapting its retail formats and channels to suit shoppers’ needs. From creating the hypermarket concept in 1963, to championing organic food via its Carrefour Bio range in 1997 and the launch of its ecommerce grocery channel, Ooshop, in 2000, the grocery retailer has remained at the forefront of pioneering food retail.  The group processes 11 million check-out transactions in its stores each day, while online the brand also sees 1.3million single visits to its online shopping websites every day.

Carrefour plans to leverage Pricer’s advanced in-store communication and management system to equip and upgrade all store formats – from hypermarkets and supermarkets, to its convenience stores and wholesale ‘cash and carry’ outlets – in France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Romainia, Poland, Brazil, Argentina and Taiwan. It intends to deploy Pricer in approximately 500 stores before the end of 2022, using the real-time, reliable and easy-to-use ESL system as the platform for Carrefour to continue to enhance both store efficiency and customer experience.

Carrefour is just one of the latest grocery retailers to look to digitalise the shelf-edge.  In November 2020, Asda announced the UK’s largest trial of ESLs, piloting 23,000 of the digital price tags in its Stevenage store.  The Walmart-owned grocer wanted to test how the technology could be used in major pricing campaigns, such as its Rollback promotions, as well as assessing efficiencies gained by in-store picking of ecommerce grocery orders.

Key capabilities of the Pricer ESL system which will be used by Carrefour includes Instant Flash, an energy-efficient flash light that provides clear visibility up and down the aisle, which enables store associates to ‘pick-to-light’, creating more efficient product replenishment as well as early detection of expiry dates.

The system also allows display of store management data, such as minimal stock, replenishment day, average sales or product’s EAN barcode, as well as automated price management, including advanced promotion management. And, because Pricer’s solution is in the Cloud, it reduces time-to-market, accelerates innovation and enables efficiency in line with Carrefour’s Cloud strategy.

Miguel Angel González Gisbert, Global CTO at Carrefour, commented:  “After a thorough evaluation of all the main manufacturers in the ESL market, we are very pleased to select Pricer as our preferred worldwide supplier in this area. Pricer has been a key partner over the last 20 years and continues to offer leading capabilities when it comes to quality of display, efficiency, simplicity and features, such as pick-to-light, that were demonstrated in the field during the selection process.”

Helena Holmgren, CEO at Pricer, said: “We are thrilled to be selected by Carrefour to provide our unique, robust and highly scalable in-store system. It’s strengthening to see that Carrefour did a rigorous evaluation of several manufacturers in the marketplace and, on that basis, has selected Pricer as the standard solution for all Carrefour store formats worldwide.”
