Journey to better jobs: Tickets on sale for the BRC’s Retail 20:20 event

Retail delegates will meet in London on Tuesday 16th May for the British Retail Consortium’s (BRC) Retail 20:20 event, where industry leaders will discuss workforce strategy for a changing landscape.

On the agenda are panel debates with retail CEOs, HR directors and other senior executives, and breakout sessions addressing specific industry hot topics.

Attendees will also have an opportunity to hear how Pets at Home has embedded flexible working into its operations from the company’s People Manager Kate Williams, and Timewise Foundation’s Joint CEO Emma Stewart.

Here are some of the must-see sessions from this year’s event:

Retail CEO Panel: Setting the scene – where is retail in the UK heading?

  • Wilf Walsh, CEO, Carpetright
  • Campbell Robb, Chief Executive, Joseph Rowntree Foundation
  • John Hannett, General Secretary, Usdaw

The panel will address current industry challenges and how the sector needs to adapt in terms of people, technology and consumers. Up for discussion are the policy drivers shaping new retail.

Panel: The people challenge – unlocking the initiative and creativity of people and keeping them engaged in the new world of retail

  • Helen Webb, Chief HR Officer, Co-op
  • Maggie Porteous, Director Shop Trade, John Lewis
  • Helen Keppel-Compton, Director Retail Services, Waitrose
  • Matthew Blain, Head of HR Operations, Boots
  • Tina Oakley, Head of HR – UK Operations, Amazon

The participants will assess what the industry can do to convey a positive message about careers in retail, as well as the role senior retailers might play in the process.

A choice of breakout sessions in the afternoon will address key subjects such as the impact on retail of Brexit, the National Living Wage and changing organisational structures. The day will be capped off with a presentation from a mystery inspirational speaker on future careers in retail.
